Marc Richmond Fruit Tree Specialist

I work as a freelance fruit tree specialist covering Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and parts of Worcestershire and Herefordshire.

I trained at RHS Wisley’s fruit department, and have for many years worked as a specialist fruit tree pruner.

I also offer pruning workshops for community groups, allotment societies and gardeners, talks to clubs and societies, Apple Day events as well as advice and consultancy for individuals, organisations and local authorities. I also now offer one to one pruning coaching.

In addition, I grow and sell a wide range of apple trees focussing on the local varieties of the East Midlands such as ‘Bess Pool’, (named after the little girl who discovered the tree growing in a wood outside Nottingham in the 18th century) and important ‘heritage’ varieties such as ‘Bleinheim Orange’, ‘Orleans Reinette’ and the parent of Cox’s orange Pippin, Ribston Pippin’ .

Pruning service

There are many benefits to pruning fruit trees, including; improving the form of the tree, encouraging the development of fruit buds increasing light and air flow to minimise pests and diseases and help ripen fruit, and lets not forget opening up the tree so that the fruit can be picked easily.

Young trees need to be pruned from the first year they are planted to get the form right from the start. Most old neglected trees can be renovated back into health and fruitfulness given the right approach

After many years of working in commercial orchards i now concentrate on providing a first class service to private gardens sometimes with just a single tree and small orchards.

My emphasis is on making your trees more beautiful, fruitful and healthy. I am happy to provide a free quote, and charge by the tree

Apple Tree Nursery

I am pleased to offer a range of apple trees grafted and budded on plant health certified rootstocks. All trees are grown to organic standards.
Grafted 1 year old trees in 7 lt pots convenient to plant from September onwards. These can also be brought to Apple Day events.
Bare root trees (grown in the ground) available from December to late March.
Rootstocks
M9 – ideal for dwarf bushes, spindlebush, pyramid and cordon. Makes a tree of 6- 10 ft in height and spread, depending on the variety and soil. Quick to fruit.
M26 – Trees on this rootstock usually fruit within 3 – 4 years. Suitable for a wide variety of forms: bush, spindlbush, pyramid and cordons. Produces a tree of around 8 – 12 ft in height and spread.
MM106 - Suitable for espalliers and fans. Makes a half standard or bush tree of 12- 14 feet height and spread depending on variety, soil and location. Not suitable for wet soils.
M25 - For a standard tree of 20 - 25 ft height and spread.
I always stock a good range of heritage varieties such as bleinheim orange ,ribston and adams pearmain as well as small amounts of obscure local varieties such as Derbyshire's 'Belledge Pippin', Nottingham varieties well suited to the North such as 'Malster' or 'Mead's Broading' and also varieties such as 'Gravenstein',( Sweeden) Wealthy (USA), Belle de Boskoop ( Holland), Duchess of Oldemberg ( Russia) which although from elsewhere are hardy beautiful apples that thrive in the colder parts of the Midland s and the North.

Orchard design and planting. I have a great deal of experience in orchard design and planting orchards, from small orchards of 10 trees plus to larger products of 50 to 100 trees

Zoom Consultation

I am pleased to now offer a zoom consultation service. This started out of necessity during lockdown, and works surprisingly well! I can guide you as you prune your own trees.

Workshops & Garden Club Talks

I have extensive experience of providing tailor made pruning workshops to a wide range of diverse groups, including allotment societies community orchards schools wildlife trust and the national trust. In addition I am happy to provide talks on all aspects of fruit tree care to garden clubs.
